Our Mission
Language keeps
culture alive.

Guru Nanak Punjabi School (GNPS) was founded in 1985 with a simple but powerful belief: that every child of Punjabi heritage deserves the chance to speak, read, and write in their mother tongue. We are a fully volunteer-run community language school, formally registered with the NSW Department of Education's Community Languages Program since 1997.

The school is managed by a dedicated School Committee and operates under the guidance of the ASA's Education Director. Our ~35 volunteer teachers bring warmth, patience, and deep cultural knowledge to every class, serving over 500 enrolled students across four Saturday sessions.

🌱
Nurturing roots
We create a safe, encouraging space where students build confidence in Punjabi — Gurmukhi script, spoken language, and cultural understanding.
🤝
Community-run
GNPS is entirely volunteer-powered. Our teachers, coordinators, and committee members give their time freely because they believe in this mission.
📚
Structured learning
Classes follow a structured NSW-aligned curriculum covering reading, writing, listening, and speaking — with progress tracked across year levels.
Our History
Four decades of
keeping Punjabi alive.

What began as a small gathering of families in a local community hall has grown into one of Sydney's most established Punjabi language schools.

1985
Founded in Western Sydney
A small group of Punjabi families came together with a shared concern: their children were growing up without their mother tongue. GNPS was born from that conversation — initially running from a local community hall with a handful of volunteer teachers and students.
1997
Formally registered with NSW DoE
GNPS was formally registered with the NSW Department of Education's Community Languages Program, enabling access to curriculum support, official accreditation, and structured learning outcomes for all students.
2010s
Growth & expanded sessions
Student numbers grew steadily as the Punjabi community in Western Sydney expanded. Multiple Saturday sessions were introduced to accommodate demand, and a dedicated School Committee — operating under the ASA's Education Director — was established to manage school operations professionally.
2020
Online classes launched
During the COVID-19 pandemic GNPS transitioned rapidly to online delivery, ensuring students could continue learning without interruption. The online session proved so popular that it has been retained permanently, making GNPS accessible to Punjabi families across all of Australia.
Today
500+ students & growing
GNPS now runs four sessions every Saturday — three in-person at Glenwood and one online — serving more than 500 enrolled students with a team of ~35 dedicated volunteer teachers. Our modern facility includes 11 air-conditioned classrooms equipped with Smart Boards, an admin office, and a facilities room. Our community continues to grow, and our mission remains the same.
What We Stand For
Our core values

Every decision we make as a school flows from these principles.

ਸ਼
Gurmukhi first
Gurmukhi is the sacred script of the Punjabi people. We teach it with pride, ensuring every student can read the Gurbani and engage with Punjabi literature in its authentic written form.
🫂
Inclusive community
We welcome students of all levels, backgrounds, and abilities. Whether you are a complete beginner or have some prior knowledge, you will feel at home in our classrooms.
Excellence in teaching
Our teachers are passionate, trained, and continuously developing their practice. We hold ourselves to a high standard because our students' linguistic futures depend on the quality of our teaching.
🌏
Cultural pride
Language is the gateway to culture. Beyond grammar and vocabulary, we celebrate Punjabi music, poetry, history, and festivals — helping students feel proud of who they are.
🤲
Seva & volunteering
The spirit of seva (selfless service) is central to our school. Our teachers and committee members volunteer their time freely, embodying the values we teach our students.
🔗
Intergenerational connection
We bridge generations — helping young Australians of Punjabi heritage connect with their parents, grandparents, and ancestral homeland through the shared bond of language.
Leadership
The people behind
the school.

GNPS is managed by a volunteer School Committee and operates under the guidance of the ASA's (Australian Sikh Association) Education Director. Our committee members give their time freely to ensure the school runs smoothly and continues to thrive for the community.
